Unlocking Potential and Skill

3.4 ๐Ÿ’ช Unlocking Potential and Skill

Ability Modals (Can and Could) allow you to express talents, physical capabilities, professional skills, and conditional possibilities.

๐Ÿ“Š Can vs. Could: Time & Realism Matrix

Modal Timeline Purpose / Meaning Example Sentence
Can Present / Future General ability or skill right now She can code in Python fluently.
Could Past General ability in past time When I was young, I could run very fast.
Could Conditional / Present Hypothetical ability (if conditions allow) We could finish early if everyone helps.

๐Ÿ“ Real-World Examples Explained

1. Present Professional Skill

“Our lead technician can repair damaged motherboard circuits.”
  • can: Shows a proven present capability.

2. Past Skill No Longer Possessed

“Ten years ago, he could work all night without feeling tired.”
  • could: Refers to a past capacity that is no longer true today.

3. Conditional Potential

“If we receive the budget approval, we could hire two new designers.”
  • could: Shows potential future action depending on a condition (if).

๐Ÿšซ Common Mistakes: Correct vs. Incorrect

1. Using “Can” for Past Timeline Ability

โŒ Incorrect: “Yesterday, I can not open the office door.”

โœ… Correct: “Yesterday, I could not open the office door.”

Why it’s wrong: Because the timeline is in the past (yesterday), you must use could not (or couldn’t).

2. Combining “Can” with “Able to”

โŒ Incorrect: “He can be able to solve the problem.”

โœ… Correct: “He can solve the problem.” OR “He is able to solve the problem.”

Why it’s wrong: Can and able to mean the exact same thing. Using them together is repetitive.
