πŸ“ Real-World Examples Explained

1. Linking to an Adjective Description

“The software architecture remains stable.”
  • remains (Linking Verb): Serves as an equal sign connecting software architecture to stable.
  • Formula: Software Architecture = Stable.

2. Linking to a Renaming Noun

“Sarah is our principal database administrator.”
  • is (Linking Verb): Connects Sarah directly to her title database administrator.
  • Formula: Sarah = Principal Database Administrator.

🚫 Common Mistakes: Correct vs. Incorrect

1. Trying to Find an Object After a Linking Verb

❌ Incorrect: “In ‘The soup tastes delicious,’ ‘delicious’ is the direct object.”

βœ… Correct: “In ‘The soup tastes delicious,’ ‘delicious’ is a subject complement (adjective).”

Why it’s wrong: Direct objects receive physical or mental actions. Linking verbs do not perform actions, so words following them describe the subject.

✏️ Quick Quiz: Apply the Equal Sign Test!

Replace the bolded verb with an equal sign (=). Does the sentence still make sense?
